Mo. gas average falls 6 cents through Labor Day

Posted online
The Missouri average retail gas price dropped 6.1 cents during the past week, ending at $3.20 per gallon on Labor Day, according to GasBuddy.com's survey of some 3,940 filling stations in the Show-Me State.

The U.S. average ticked down 0.7 cents during the past week to $3.43 per gallon yesterday, according to a news release.

Missouri's Sept. 1 average represented a 8.1-cent decrease from a month ago and 32-cent fall from a year ago. The U.S. average dropped 7.1 cents during the past month and 16.1 cents during the past year.

"Falling demand and an impending change back to cheaper winter will begin to weigh on current gasoline prices in the next few weeks, and by mid-September, much of the nation should see gasoline prices falling once again," said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst, in the release. "By October, the national average will likely have declined another 5-10 cents per gallon, and by Halloween, we could see a national average lower than the $3.31 (per gallon) we saw to start 2014."

Missouri ranked No. 6 this morning on GasBuddy's list of the lowest gas averages in the nation. No. 1 was South Carolina with an average $3.15 per gallon, while Hawaii was at the bottom with its average of $4.28 per gallon.

In Missouri, the cheapest gas could be purchased for $2.99 per gallon at a station in Sikeston. The highest price, $3.49 per gallon, was selling at a Carthage station, according to MissouriGasPrices.com.

Springfieldians could purchase gas at $3.09 per gallon at the two Sam's Club locations, 745 W. El Camino Alto Drive or 3660 E. Sunshine St. Prices elsewhere ranged from $3.13 per gallon to $3.15 per gallon.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil was trading at $95.96 per barrel as of 9:28 a.m. Light sweet crude oil futures for October were trading at $96.64 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.[[In-content Ad]]
