India blocks Facebook's Free Basics service

India’s telecommunications regulator banned the practice of zero rating, where operators charge different tariffs for different data services.

The move marks a blow to Facebook’s Free Basics service, which gives people free access to services through special partnerships with local mobile carriers.

Internet freedom activists have claimed the service is a violation of net neutrality.

For Facebook's part, the intention was to get people to use the Internet and encourage them to buy a data plan so they can see what people are linking to from the free services.
