High-ranking SPS leader to retire

John Mulford, deputy superintendent of operations for Springfield Public Schools, signaled his retirement from the district.

Mulford is scheduled to exit SPS on June 30, 2023, according to a news release.

“Being an educator is all I’ve known, and I will truly miss the students and colleagues who make this such a wonderful profession,” Mulford said in the release. “As I retire from public education in Missouri, I will draw on the friendships and lessons I’ve learned. Undoubtedly, my next chapter will include serving, as that is what brings me joy."

Mulford, 46, does not have specific plans after he retires from the district, said Stephen Hall, chief communications officer for SPS, via email.

Mulford was the first hire by Superintendent Grenita Lathan, who also started at the district in 2021, according to past reporting. Prior to his hiring at SPS, Mulford served as superintendent of Meramec Valley R-III School District.

As deputy superintendent of operations, Mulford oversees financial and business services, transportation, facilities and construction, and human resources, among other areas. He's credited in the release with supporting the Community Task Force on Facilities' work that led to the SPS Board approving Proposition S for the April 2023 ballot, as well as helping the district to adopt a new strategic plan and return to normal operations from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I was pleased to have an opportunity to select John as the deputy superintendent of operations, and we arrived in Springfield at the same time," Lathan said in the release. "I have appreciated his steadfast support, professionalism and genuine kindness. We wish him the very best as he looks ahead to a well-deserved retirement and new adventures.”

To find Mulford’s successor, the district plans to post the job this week and engage with professional organizations to share the opening, Hall said.
