When Sydnie Myers walks into an event space, she rarely sees it exactly as it is. She sees where the eye should go. She sees how color could change the room, where an oversized installation could create a focal point and which details might make someone stop, take a picture or simply feel like they’ve walked into something special.
That ability to see what a space could be has become the foundation of Dreamy & Darling Creations.
Seven years ago, Sydnie was looking for a way to build a flexible career around raising her daughter and doing something creative. Her mother, an entrepreneur and interior designer, encouraged her to experiment with the elaborate balloon installations Sydnie was beginning to see emerge on the coasts.
There weren’t many tools or classes to teach her how to do it. So she posted on Facebook asking someone to buy the materials and let her try.
One project became another.
Today, Dreamy & Darling works with businesses and organizations on some of the region’s largest events and experiences — approaching each with a question bigger than what the décor should look like: What does this event need to accomplish?
Some clients want a show-stopping photo opportunity guests will share. Others want to transform an ordinary venue into an immersive experience. An annual event may need to retain its identity while giving returning guests something they haven’t seen before.
“I never want someone to walk into an event and think, ‘This looks just like the event I went to last month,’” Sydnie says.
For Mercy, Dreamy & Darling has created installations surrounding milestones for its children’s hospital, beginning with a carnival-inspired environment for the project announcement and continuing through its raise-the-beam ceremony. The individual events are different, but consistent colors and visual elements help connect the experiences to the larger story Mercy is telling.
At 14 Mill Market, Sydnie helped transform the Whisper Room into immersive pop-up experiences. An Alice in Wonderland concept incorporated oversized flowers throughout the space. For a pirate-themed experience, her team created enormous tentacles when Sydnie couldn’t find anything that accomplished what she envisioned.
“If I can’t find what I’m imagining, sometimes we just have to make it,” she says.
That ability to customize is important because every venue presents different opportunities — and problems. Sydnie can look at a difficult room and mentally begin moving pieces, identifying sightlines and imagining how guests will experience it.
During an installation, she’ll regularly walk completely away, reset her attention and return to see the room with fresh eyes — closer to how a guest will experience it for the first time.
Creativity, however, only matters if it can be executed.
For five years, Dreamy & Darling has produced bid-day installations for sorority houses at the University of Missouri. This year, the team has roughly three hours to complete two large houses. Designs have to create immediate visual impact while accounting for weather, structure, timing and the realities of installation.
“I joke that sometimes I’m an engineer, too,” Sydnie says.
That same discipline carries into corporate and community events. Sydnie starts by understanding the client’s nonnegotiables, audience, color palette, budget and goals. She determines how involved they want to be creatively and communicates throughout the process so there are no surprises on event day.
That combination is what Dreamy & Darling has built its reputation around: creative ideas, custom installations and an experienced team capable of bringing them to life.
For the client, that also means having a proven event partner in the room — someone who can look at a challenging space, understand the objective, anticipate problems and confidently take responsibility for an important piece of the event.
It’s a long way from Sydnie’s first experimental balloon garland. Today, Dreamy & Darling provides large-scale event design, balloon and floral installations, custom fabrication and décor, while Serendipity by Dreamy & Darling Creations extends the business into retail and creative workshops. The products are designed to make a room look exceptional. The partnership helps make sure the event works.
