A $460,000 expansion of the Fassnight Greenway Trail has begun.
The construction process started yesterday, according to a news release. Pleasant Hill-based Radmacher Brothers Excavating Co. is conducting the work, which starts at Clay Avenue and continues east through Phelps Grove Park to end at Brookside Drive near the Springfield Art Museum. Clay Avenue is the western boundary of Phelps Grove Park.
The new 1,600 linear-foot path will include Americans with Disabilities Act conforming ramps and will connect to shared bike lanes on Brookside Drive over a new pedestrian bridge. The project is expected to take roughly four months to complete.
It's funded through federal Surface Transportation Block Grant funds, as well as a 20% match by the city through its eighth-cent transportation sales tax, according to the release.
The trail is part of a series of greenway projects underway in the city, including the $26 million Grant Avenue Parkway plan. New connections in the city’s trail system are a priority in the city's Forward SGF comprehensive plan, according to past reporting.
