A classic car convention this week is expected to positively impact Springfield's economy.
The July 18-21 International Ford Retractable Club Convention, the 52nd annual event, is expected to generate an economic impact of $119,000, according to a news release from the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau Inc. The event is contributing to Greene County’s $918 million tourism industry.
“We are excited to welcome the 52nd Annual International Ford Retractable Club Convention to Springfield and see these wonderful cars in our community,” said Mark Hecquet, president and CEO of the Springfield CVB, in the release. “Group business is vital to our local tourism economy, supporting our restaurants, hotels, retail establishments and attractions."
Vehicles are slated to be seen throughout the city during the convention. The group's car cruise starts 6 p.m. July 20 at Oasis Hotel & Convention Center.
"Cars will leave the hotel and cruise parade-style as convention attendees head to dinner at restaurants throughout the city," officials said in the release.
Up to 250 collectors are expected to be in the city. They collect Ford vehicles with retracting hardtops. Around 50,000 Skyliners were sold from 1957-59.
Moseley’s Discount Office Products was purchased; Side Chick opened in Branson; and the Springfield franchise store of NoBaked Cookie Dough changed ownership.
