CJW Transportation Consultants: A Legacy of Engineering Excellence and Strategic Growth

Posted online

Founded in 2005 by C. Jay Wynn and Mary Wynn, CJW Transportation Consultants has evolved from a specialized traffic engineering firm into a multifaceted engineering powerhouse. The company’s journey reflects not only its resilience but also its strategic vision in navigating challenges and seizing opportunities in a dynamic industry.
Initially focused on traffic engineering, CJW faced a pivotal moment during the recession of 2008-2009. The economic downturn prompted the firm to diversify its services, expanding into civil site design and stormwater management. This bold move not only stabilized the company during uncertain times but also positioned it for long-term success, broadening its expertise and market reach.
Chris Wynn, the son of Jay and Mary, joined the firm in 2015 while pursuing his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology. His entry into the family business marked the beginning of a new chapter. With fresh perspectives and a commitment to innovation, Chris quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming vice president.
As CJW approaches its 20th anniversary, the Wynns are preparing for a smooth transition of leadership. A succession plan is already in place, with Chris recently promoted to president. Jay continues to serve as CEO, and Mary as CFO, ensuring that the company’s leadership remains strong and steady. The family-owned nature of CJW allows for flexibility in this transition, enabling a gradual and natural handover of responsibilities as Chris prepares to lead the firm into the future.
Looking ahead, CJW is not just focused on maintaining its strong foundation but also on expanding its horizons. Chris has set his sights on growth beyond the local market, eyeing opportunities in nearby regions such as Joplin, Northwest Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. This strategic expansion includes increasing their private sector work alongside the public projects that have long been their bread and butter. “We plan to continue to diversify. We want to stay relevant in the market and up-to-date on new technologies and advances in the industry,” Chris states.
In addition to business growth, Chris is committed to fostering a positive company culture. He plans to enhance employee benefits, building on the flexible work schedule already in place, which allows employees to work four 9-hour days with Friday afternoons off. “We have to be more flexible with schedules because that’s what the workforce demands,” Chris says, recognizing the evolving needs of today’s workforce. He also aims to improve work-from-home options and maternity/paternity benefits.
“As a family-run business, you can easily get overshadowed by larger companies that have more resources. We need to stay competitive,” Chris emphasizes, underscoring the importance of maintaining a strong employee base and high morale. While there is no set timeframe for Jay and Mary’s retirement, Chris is focused on continuing the legacy by trusting the team around him and surrounding himself with top talent, just as his father has always done.
As CJW embarks on its third decade, it stands as a testament to the Wynn family’s dedication and vision. The company’s growth, adaptability, and commitment to innovation ensure that it will continue to deliver exceptional solutions to its clients for years to come.
