Construction of roadway improvements along the Grant Avenue Parkway development is scheduled to start this month after two years of preparations.
The city of Springfield is hosting a ceremony on May 19 at Parkview High School, near the intersection of Grant Avenue and Chrisman Road, to kick off construction, according to a news release.
The six-company team called the GAP Collaborative, led by Radmacher Brothers Excavating Co. Inc. of Pleasant Hill, will oversee construction that include streetscape improvements, such as stormwater and sidewalk upgrades. After the school year ends, Grant Avenue between Ildereen and Meadowmere streets is slated to be closed as construction ramps up.
The project is designed to create a multiuse pathway along Grant Avenue between Sunshine Street and downtown Springfield. The three-mile route is envisioned to include bike- and pedestrian-friendly facilities, various traffic-calming improvements, bridge enhancements, utility upgrades, fiber-optic internet connectivity and additional crossing and intersection improvements, according to past reporting.
City spokesperson Kristen Milam said construction is expected to be completed in 2024.
Springfield in 2019 was the recipient of $21 million in grant funding from the federal government for the Grant Avenue Parkway project.
Since then, the city has conducted two years' worth of community engagement, along with the selection of the companies involved.
The GAP Collaborative design and construction team behind the $26 million project comprises Radmacher Brothers, Kansas City-based project designers Cook, Flatt & Strobel Engineers Inc., Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects LLC, VSM Engineering LLC of Kansas City, Custom Engineering Design Co. Inc. and Warsaw-based Shockey Consulting LLC, according to past reporting.
