A Kansas City Chiefs player, for the third straight year, accepted the Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield’s invitation to headline the nonprofit’s annual Steak & Steak dinner.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is scheduled to visit Springfield for the April 9 fundraiser at University Plaza Convention Center, the Boys & Girls Clubs announced in a news release last week.
This year’s goal is to net $250,000 to help cover fees for Boys & Girls Clubs’ more than 2,500 members. The nonprofit provides youth — many from disadvantaged circumstances — with daily social, physical and educational development activities for certain fees per semester.
The event’s website page indicates tickets have sold out. Prior events have raised more than $200,000, though the 2018 event’s total was not cited. A spokesperson for the nonprofit could not be reached for comment by deadline.
The event, known for its steak dinner and charity auction, this year featured Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Prior to that, former quarterback Alex Smith helped the nonprofit bring in $290,000 via over 1,000 guests in 2017, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.
Mahomes became starting quarterback after the Chiefs traded Smith in January.
During the 2018 season, the 23-year-old has amassed a league-leading 48 touchdowns and tallied 4,816 yards, according to Chiefs.com.
