Canada easily maintained its status as the No. 1 buyer of Missouri goods in 2017, as state exports rose 1.7 percent overall, according to Department of Economic Development data released this morning.
Total exports from the Show-Me State came to $14.2 billion last year, up from $13.9 billion in 2016. On the list, Belgium increased its purchases by 17.6 percent to overtake Japan for the No. 4 spot.
Missouri’s top five export partners in 2017 were:
1. Canada, $5.2 billion
2. Mexico, $2.6 billion
3. China, $926 million
4. Belgium, $578 million
5. Japan, $554 million
While Canada stayed on top, its imports of Missouri goods were down 1.5 percent in 2017, according to the report.
During the year, transportation equipment was the top Missouri export product with $3.9 billion in sales. The sector was followed by chemicals, at $2.6 billion, and food and kindred products, at $1.4 billion.
