Broadband funding coming to SWMO

Posted online

The state this morning announced the issuance of millions of dollars’ worth of broadband grants, and a portion is coming to southwest Missouri.

New Cingular Wireless PCS LLC has been approved for $848,602 in funding for two projects in Bates, Jasper and Vernon counties.

The Missouri Department of Economic Development indicated in a news release that over $7.9 million is being awarded through the second round of the Cell Towers Grant Program. However, none of the other selected organizations have projects in southwest Missouri.

New Cingular Wireless PCS is a subsidiary of AT&T, according to Federal Communications Commission records.

The broadband funding announced this morning is earmarked for the construction of new towers that would provide better cell service and greater 911 connectivity to high-cost areas, according to the release.

"As a result of this program, thousands of locations lacking adequate coverage will now receive quality, reliable cellular connectivity," Gov. Mike Parson said in the release.
