Attorney Matthew Growcock was the first person in his family to graduate from college. Now, he’s making a name for himself in the legal community as an associate in the tort litigation department of Lathrop & Gage LLP.
In 2010, he was named one of Missouri’s Up and Coming Lawyers by Missouri Lawyers Weekly, and last year, he was chosen among the Missouri and Kansas Rising Stars by Super Lawyers magazine. The recognition is based on peer recommendations, work quality and accomplishments.
At Lathrop & Gage, Growcock primarily focuses on personal injury defense litigation, representing clients who have been sued on allegations that they have injured someone. “Lawsuits are scary for people who are not accustomed to litigation, and many of my small-business-owner clients fear they will lose it all depending on the outcome of the litigation,” Growcock says. “I have been successful in resolving their cases in a manner that allows the small businesses to continue to provide their services to the community. It benefits the whole community when our small businesses can continue to operate, provide jobs and services, and contribute to the economic strength of our area.”
Growcock leads a team working on cases that often involve long, stressful hours.
“As a leader, I try to help the team deal with the stress so we can work as efficiently as possible,” he says. “More than once, I have had members of the team tell me they appreciate me staying calm and anchoring the team.”
His efforts haven’t gone unnoticed by Lathrop & Gage partner Gary Cunningham, who says Growcock possesses a maturity level beyond his peers.
“His legal skills far exceed his length of practice, and his innate ability to deliver high-quality work is exceeded only by his effectiveness and efficient results,” Cunningham says.
Growcock also serves as city attorney for Fremont Hills, where he lives with his family. “I work closely with the mayor, city clerk and the board of aldermen. I believe they have come to respect my guidance and direction not only on legal issues, but all important issues discussed by the board,” he says.
Among his community roles, Growcock was appointed to the board of directors of Harmony House in 2007, and he served as its treasurer until earlier this year. Now, he is on the executive leadership team for the 2012 Walk for Wishes, a fundraiser for the Make A Wish Foundation.
