Shawn Washburn opened Early Bird Breakfast Pub on Mar. 1 at 1717 E. Cherokee St. in a 3,000-square-foot space that formerly housed Twilight Grille. Stephen Washburn said startup costs to perform light renovations and purchase equipment for Springfield’s first breakfast pub were around $80,000. The restaurant features a full bar in addition to serving breakfast, brunch and lunch items, such as omelets and sandwiches. Signature items include the $8-$10 Bird’s Nest, which Washburn described as breakfast choices served on a pastry, and Brick & Mortar Coffee. The eatery seats about 100 people indoors, with additional seating for 40 on an outdoor patio. The brothers signed a three-year lease with J. Haik Properties LLC for an undisclosed rate. Hours: 7 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.–4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Sunday. Phone: (417) 885-8088. Web:

Sarah Talley opened the first-in-market Doc Popcorn LLC store Mar. 4 in Battlefield Mall, 2825 S. Glenstone Ave., near the J.C. Penney north court. The cafe-style retailer occupies nearly 1,000 square feet in the former Handbags & More storefront, Clay Talley said. Doc Popcorn serves freshly popped, cholesterol-free popcorn with zero trans-fats in a variety of flavors. Talley said the Springfield store also serves ice cream treats because the Boulder-based popcorn company was acquired by Paducah, Ky.-based Dippin’ Dots Franchising LLC last year. The mall location is the first dual-brand store. The Talleys, who hold franchise rights to both stores, paid $70,000 for the rights for up to five Doc Popcorn stores. The first store cost about $200,000 to open, Talley said. Hours: 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon–6 p.m. Sunday. Phone: (417) 775-6832. Web:

Shannon Todd started the real estate firm in Ozark in January 2013, after Murney Associates, Realtors closed its office in the city. Murfin-Hayes said plans to open a Springfield office were accelerated by a market uptick and requests from Springfield clients for a more convenient site. Nine of the firm’s 25 agents operate out of the Springfield branch, which Murfin-Hayes said cost at least $75,000 to open. The 1,600-sqaure-foot space is leased from Bill Beall Co. for three years at an undisclosed rate. Southwest Missouri Realty’s 2014 sales volume exceeded $35 million. The company offers buyer and seller services for single and multifamily residential and commercial properties, as well as undeveloped land and lots. Hours: 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
