Nixon names interim auditor after Schweich's death

Posted online
Gov. Jay Nixon appointed an interim auditor following the Feb. 26 death of Tom Schweich.

John Watson, the governor’s senior adviser, stepped in Feb. 27 until a permanent appointment can be made. When Nixon makes a decision, Watson will immediately resign as interim auditor, according to a news release.

“I know that John Watson will perform these duties with the professionalism, integrity and independence the citizens of Missouri expect and deserve, and I am pleased that he has agreed to serve while I move thoroughly and expeditiously to select a permanent replacement,” Nixon said in the release.

Schweich, a gubernatorial hopeful for the 2016 governor’s race, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police statements in media reports. The Republican was elected auditor in 2010.

The Associated Press reports a memorial service for Schweich is scheduled 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Church of St. Michael and St. George, an episcopal church where Schweich was a member. The church is near Schweich’s Clayton home.

Watson served as Nixon’s chief of staff January 2009-December 2014, and in the same role for Nixon when he was attorney general. Watson also has past financial work experience at Emerson Electric in St. Louis and the state Department of Economic Development, according to the release.[[In-content Ad]]
