The Missouri State University Board of Governors voted to increase President Clif Smart's pay as commendation for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Smart's annual base pay was adjusted to $380,000, ahead of an increase to no less than $377,890 by July 1, 2022. With a 3% across-the-board raise for university employees, his compensation increased to $391,400, according to a news release.
“President Smart continued an extraordinary display of vision, judgment and agility during the pandemic,” MSU board Chair Amy Counts said in the release. “In the spirit of innovation that is core to Missouri State, the university demonstrated leadership and creativity in providing a safe campus for our students and an interactive environment that few universities chose or were able to offer this past year."
Smart's current contract expires in June 2026.
In addition to his base compensation, Smart earns $50,000 per year as part of a deferred compensation plan that will fully vest next year, according to the release. Effective June 30, 2030, he'll also be eligible for an annual cash retention bonus of $50,000, in lieu of deferred compensation.
