The local chapter of the Association for Women in Communications is transitioning to an independent organization as the national group dissolves.
AWC Springfield, MO is slated to hold an Oct. 25 launch party at Hotel Vandivort to recognize the change, according to a news release.
“We are excited about the future and look forward to the continued friendships and professional experiences AWC locally will continue to provide,” said Melissa Martelli, president, in the release.
More than 80% of the local group's members voted in favor of becoming an independent entity.
AWC ranked No. 10 on Springfield Business Journal's list this year of the area's largest industry networking groups, with 65 members as of May 1. The organization, which is open to individuals employed in the communications industry, serves as a forum for sharing ideas and best practices, according to the SBJ list.
AWC Springfield, MO is planning to assemble a team for the transition to be in charge of creating a member portal, budget and other processes, according to the release. The local organization has a $10,700 budget, said Martelli.
Local AWC officials provided a copy of the May 5 dissolution letter from the national organization to Springfield Business Journal. The letter indicates membership voted in favor of dissolution.
"It’s time to move forward in a new direction," longtime member Jane Kilburn said in the letter. "Whatever the direction, the end should represent a celebration of the 114 years of an organization that has meant so much to so many women.”
The former Kmart store on the grounds of the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World and Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium is slated for demolition, according to a permit on file with the city of Springfield.
