Journagan Construction founder, namesake dies

The founder and namesake of Springfield-based Leo Journagan Construction Co. Inc. died May 29. He was 87.

In 1948, Leo Journagan founded the company, which specializes in highway construction, and served as president for 50 years before passing the torch to his son, Allen Journagan, in 1998. After stepping down as president of the company, the elder Journagan served as chairman, according to the company's website.

In early 2010, Leo Journagan announced he would donate 3,300 acres of Douglas County farmland, as well as 1,000 head of cattle, equipment and other ranch facilities, to Missouri State University's William H. Darr School of Agriculture. At the time, the donation valued at over $7 million was the second-largest private donation in the history of MSU, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

In 2002, Journagan Construction was recognized by the Missouri Department of Transportation as the highest-rated contractor in Missouri for quality and contract compliance. The company employs some 400 and reports revenue of approximately $60 million a year, according to the its website.

A visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 4 at Greenlawn Funeral Home East, 3540 E. Seminole St., followed by a memorial service at 11. Internment at Greenlawn Funeral Home North, 3506 N. National Ave., will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Ozarks Food Harvest, according to his obituary at GreenlawnFuneralHome.com.[[In-content Ad]]
