Construction in the Ozarks: Winter 2012

Welcome to the winter 2012 edition of Construction in the Ozarks. Compiled by editorial intern Kris Collins, these project profiles spotlight some of the structures taking shape across southwest Missouri in several sectors, including an athletics center, two school projects and a retirement community expansion.


Fieldhouse Sportscenter
2235 W. Kingsley St.

Morelock-Ross Builders Inc. is constructing the Fieldhouse Sportscenter at 2235 W. Kingsley St. for majority owner Dr. Craig Naugle of Ozarks Dermatology Specialists. The 46,000-square-foot complex will be primarily used as a basketball and volleyball facility. Mike Edwards, facility operator, said the project is about three weeks behind schedule and would be completed by April 20, noting sports leagues start in early May. Though the completion date has been pushed back, the project hasn’t outgrown its $5 million price tag. H Design Group LLC is the project architecture firm. Engineers for the project are: Colvin Jones and Davis LLC, mechanical, electrical and plumbing; Mettemeyer Engineering LLC, structural; and Anderson Engineering, civil.

Arvest Bank
4140 S. Fremont Ave.

Morelock-Ross Builders Inc. is the general contractor for Arvest Bank at 4140 S. Fremont Ave. The 8,000-square-foot building designed by Rogers, Ark.-based Hight-Jackson Associates PA will include offices, training and conference rooms and a large lobby, project manager Andy Ross said. Engineers for the project are Lee Engineering Inc., civil; HSA Engineering Consulting Services Inc., based in Fort Smith, Ark., mechanical, electrical and plumbing; and Tatum-Smith Engineers Inc., structural. The $2 million project is following Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-Silver standards, Ross  said, pointing to energy efficient light fixtures and  pervious pavement to create a self-sustaining landscape. Ross said the bank, one of Arvest’s larger branches in Springfield, is scheduled to be completed by Dec. 15, in time for the bank’s Jan. 1 opening day.

Communication Solutions LLC
2645 W. Sunshine St.

Heritage Construction Co. is the general contractor for the construction of the $5 million Communication Solutions LLC facility, owned by Morris Investments LLC. Erdmann Street Architecture & Planning Inc. designed the 30,500-square-foot building at 2645 W. Sunshine St. Heritage Construction Co. President and Owner Robert VanOmmeren said the project is on track for its March completion date. VanOmmeren said the two-story front of the building is designed for housing corporate offices, while the back of the facility will house two call centers and support centers, such as customer service and quality assurance. Engineers for the project are Palmerton & Parrish Inc., civil; Meridian Structural Works Inc., structural; and Bowlin & Associates LLC, mechanical, electrical and plumbing.


Fremont Retirement Community
1520 E. Bates St.

The expansion of Fremont Retirement Community at 1520 E. Bates St. is set to be completed by July 1. Build LLC is the general contractor on the $3.3 million job. H Design Group LLC designed the memory care facility and the assisted living facility being added, which total 35,000 square feet. Project engineers are Olsson Associates Inc., civil; Wells & Scaletty LLC, structural; and Colvin Jones Davis, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering. Project Manager Steve Monsanto said the two-story 56-bed assisted living facility, which has 56 beds, will be equipped with suite style rooms, contain a common area and a kitchen and a movie viewing room. The 7,000-sqaure-foot memory care facility will have similarly styled rooms, a kitchen and “memory boxes,” to hold personal items that jog residents memories.

Mercy Orthopedic Hospital
3101 E. Farm Road 188

Mercy Orthopedic Hospital, a $116 million project, is being constructed by St. Louis based- McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. at 3101 E. Farm Road 188. HKS Architects Inc. designed the 200,000-square-foot hospital, a four-story, 48-room facility with eight operating rooms, inpatient and outpatient pharmacies, and on-site imaging capabilities for MRIs, CTs, ultrasounds and diagnostic radiology. Olsson Associates Inc. is the engineering firm responsible for civil and structural work; Heideman Associates Inc. is the electric, mechanical and plumbing engineer. Project Manager Jared Hites said the project is on par for its fall 2013 completion date.

Jeffries Elementary School
4051 S. Scenic Ave.

Springfield Public Schools contracted Larry Snyder & Co. to construct the $3.9 million addition to Jeffries Elementary School at 4051 S. Scenic Ave. Dake Wells Architecture Inc. designed the gymnasium and modifications to entrances and parking areas. Olsson Associates Inc. is the engineering firm covering civil, mechanical, electrical and plumbing duties, while Meridian Structural Works Inc. handles structural work. Taresa Bledsoe, manager of community relations for Springfield Public Schools, said the 12,900 square feet of modifications will be completed in January.


Spokane Middle School
1130 Spokane Road

JE Dunn Construction Co. was contracted by Spokane R-VII School District to build an expansion to Spokane Middle School at 1130 Spokane Road. The new additions to the school, totaling 28,000 square feet, were designed by Dake Wells Architecture Inc. Engineers involved in the project are Great River Engineering, civil; Meridian Structural Works Inc, structural; and Colvin Jones Davis, mechanical, plumbing and electrical. Senior Project Manager David Atkinson said the $5.5 million project will be completed by June 2013. The new addition will include classrooms, a library, administrative offices, a new main entrance and a bridge over Spokane Road to ensure safe crossing for students and faculty traveling between the middle and high schools.[[In-content Ad]]
