My leadership style has been largely shaped by experiencing what doesn’t work. I’ve learned that successful leadership hinges on clear communication and the ability to effectively convey your vision to others. Having witnessed the chaos that ensues from poor communication and unclear expectations in other work settings – what I candidly call the “hot mess express” – I’ve become determined to create a different environment for my team. These challenging experiences taught me the critical importance of setting clear expectations and ensuring everyone understands their direction.
One of my most significant leadership challenges came when I stepped into a pilot role merging clinical and sales teams. As the youngest manager working with nurses who had decades of experience, I knew I needed to build trust and buy-in. Rather than simply implementing changes, I sat down with the clinical team and actively listened to their concerns. By incorporating their feedback into our strategy and showing them the potential benefits, including financial opportunities, I was able to create a plan that worked for everyone. This experience reinforced that effective leadership isn’t just about giving direction – it’s about hearing your team and demonstrating that their input shapes the path forward.
My leadership philosophy centers on four key principles: listening, resilience, decisiveness, and gratitude. I’ve learned that being decisive is crucial for moving a team forward – while decisions aren’t always easy, hesitation can hinder progress. Resilience means handling difficult situations positively and not letting setbacks define you. My perspective on gratitude was profoundly influenced by my husband, who taught me to see opportunities even in challenges. This mindset shift has been transformational, both personally and professionally, helping me approach obstacles with a growth mindset rather than negativity.
