SPS deputy superintendent takes top job in Fayetteville

John Mulford, the deputy superintendent of operations for Springfield Public Schools who late last year announced his plan to retire from the district, is headed to northwest Arkansas.

The Fayetteville Public Schools Board of Education unanimously voted March 8 to select Mulford as its next superintendent, according to a news release.

“I am humbled and honored to serve as the next superintendent for Fayetteville Public Schools,” Mulford said in the release. “During my interview with the board of education, I was inspired by their collective commitment to excellence while prioritizing the uniqueness of each individual."  

Mulford this summer is slated to become Fayetteville Public Schools' 14th superintendent in its 152-year history, according to the release. He'll succeed John Colbert, who is retiring after 47 years with the district.

Fayetteville Public Schools has a student population of roughly 10,500, according to its website.

Mulford, who is scheduled to exit SPS on June 30, announced his decision to leave the district in December.

SPS has promoted Travis Shaw, executive director of operations, to succeed Mulford, according to past reporting.
