Jonathan Smith, Saint Louis University's vice president of diversity and community engagement, died on Juneteenth. He was 61.

Smith 11 days earlier had a stroke, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

He also served as an assistant professor of African American studies at SLU and pushed for Juneteenth to be celebrated as a holiday at the university.

President Joe Biden late last week signed a bill making Juneteenth a national holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States.
