Nixa mask order to end this month

Posted online

The city of Nixa is lifting its mask mandate at month's end.

Nixa Mayor Brian Steele cited vaccination opportunities in the community. According to a news release, the order ends at 11:59 p.m. on April 30.

“I am now confident that by April 30, a significant portion of our population will have had an opportunity to be vaccinated, including the most vulnerable members of our community," Steele said in the release.

Citing Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services data, Nixa spokesperson Drew Douglas said nearly 25% of Christian County residents have initiated the vaccination process.

Steele in October first enacted the emergency face mask requirement in response to increased coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, according to past reporting. The order was extended indefinitely in December.

In the release, Steele thanked residents for complying with the order.

“By wearing a mask, you helped Nixa stay open for business," he said in the release. "Despite everything the pandemic took from us, I am proud of our community for the way we came together to protect and serve one another."

In Springfield, the city's masking order is slated to end when thresholds of less than 20 new cases per day, under 20 hospitalizations in COVID-19 isolation and a vaccination rate of 50% of the eligible population are met. In Greene County, nearly 34% of residents have had at least one shot, according to the Springfield-Greene County Health Department’s COVID-19 dashboard.

The announcement in Nixa follows a similar one in Branson, which informed residents last month that its mask mandate would end in May.
