Springfield resident Aleta Dyer and her neighbors on Blackman Road have been fighting Wal-Mart for around seven years.
The retailer has attempted to develop a supercenter at either end of Blackman south at Battlefield, and north at Sunshine.
Dyer said she's heard a lot about "how a man can develop his land any way he wants to." That is true, she said, provided development is compatible with existing zoning.
"It is not appropriate to rezone property just so one person can make more money," she said.
It is the job of planning and zoning officials to "bring balance to the community through zoning laws and classifications," Dyer said, adding that if the laws are not going to be adhered to, what is the point of having them?
