This summer was our granddaughter Chrissy’s turn. She picked Washington, D.C., to see the White House. And, she wanted to go by car so she could go through a lot of states. Oh, my.
We had a great time. We traveled the southern route through Tennessee and Virginia and saw many things on the way.
We stayed in a hotel and used the metro in D.C. We went to the Capitol and had navy bean soup in the Capitol dining room, got stuck in Roy Blunt’s office during a Capitol lockdown due to a reported shooting, went to the zoo and saw the baby panda, visited many museums, and saw the White House by day and by night.
On the way home, we traveled the northern route through Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois. We stopped at a lot of places, including the place in Pennsylvania where Flight 93 went down.
Then, it was back home to her family, where the 5-year-old wanted to know if we could leave right now for her trip.
Why 9 years old? They are old enough to remember, old enough to know what they want, young enough to mind their grandparents, old enough to dress and take care of themselves, young enough to not mind being with adults, and we all have a blast.
