Your car may be spying on you

Posted online
Talking cars are old hat these days. Drivers think nothing of asking their cars for directions and hearing turn-by-turn replies. But did you know your car also talks about you, and not to other cars in the parking garage?

Just like your smartphone, your late-model car probably has software capable of tracking your every move, and of relaying that information to whomever is set up to receive it, from the car’s maker to marketers to Uncle Sam, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

Automakers can share your information with advertisers who can then funnel ads to your car based on where your GPS coordinates tell them you are. Some states are proposing taxes based on miles driven instead of gallons of gas purchased, also trackable via GPS.

Privacy advocates are concerned about the intrusions and some automakers say the federal government needs to create guidelines for them to follow since most consumers aren’t aware of the privacy risks.
