A year-old restaurant concept called Migulito’s Wrap and Roll Cafe opened yesterday in a downtown site that has experienced high turnover in recent years. The space was vacant for a month, following the mid-October closure of Boca Mocha Coffee & Cafe.
The 3,000-square-foot restaurant at 320 Park Central West is the second location for entrepreneur Michael Taylor, who launched the concept about a year ago at 3650 S. Campbell Ave. The cafe serves multicultural styles of food, such as Thai, Mexican and Greek, in wraps, bowls, salads, gyros and burritos that average $8 to $10 per dish, said Taylor, who worked for 10 years as owner of a Montana contracting company before starting Migulito’s.
Taylor is opening just a month after Boca Mocha Coffee & Cafe shut down some 15 months into its startup. Rendezvous Coffee Lounge operated in the Park Central building since 2008, when it occupied the former longtime studio of photographer Randy Bacon. In 2006, Bacon created Monach Art Factory a few blocks to the west and moved into the 600 W. College St. building that houses other artistic-minded businesses.
Taylor runs the downtown restaurant with five part-time employees, and he estimated startup costs of $15,000 to cover liquor and business licenses and kitchen equipment. Migulito’s is personally financed along with funding from a private investor, he said.
Taylor said landlord Scott Murray is leasing the space for $2,300 per month the first year.
“We signed a five-year lease. We’re in it to win it,” he said. “We’ll be here for years to come.”
