It's about time. What took us so long? Thank goodness a plan is in the works to remedy the mother of all national omissions. At least 50 years too late though it may be, a nationwide push is under way to build a memorial to the veterans of World War II.
Why a groundswell for a monument didn't emerge at the end of the war in 1945 I'll never know. It may be that the nation's collective relief was so great at the defeat of Germany and Japan that it didn't occur to the nation that the returning servicemen and servicewomen deserved more than a simple "thanks" for the most noble contribution any generation ever made to the nation.
Maybe at the time no one thought of erecting a monument. The oversight is about to be remedied. At long last, a monument is being discussed.
