WOW prepares for expansion, brief closure

Posted online
Wonders of Wildlife, the National Fish and Wildlife Museum, has plans to expand, but only after a temporary closure.

WOW is preparing to start construction Dec. 3 on an expansion that will bring the facility’s total size to more than 150,000 square feet, according to a news release, compared to its current 92,000 square feet. WOW spokesman Gary Ellison said the project would cost $14 million; Butler, Rosenbury & Partners is the project architect, and DeWitt and Associates is the general contractor.

The downside is that the museum is expected to close for up to six months during the construction, temporarily displacing eight full-time and 19 part-time employees. The museum is working to help those employees find interim employment, according to the release.

The addition will include a large reflecting pool flanking the aquarium and a revamped Wildlife Galleries section. It also will connect the museum to the neighboring Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World.

“This is an exciting time for Wonders of Wildlife,” acting Executive Director Peggy Smith said in the release. “The initial design concepts illustrate a truly incredible experience for all who visit.”

WOW opened in November 2001 with a price tag of $52 million. Former Executive Director Tony Schoonen left in May to become chief of staff for the Boone and Crockett Club in Missoula, Mont. A search for his replacement is under way.

See SBJ’s Dec. 3 issue for more about WOW’s expansion and ongoing search for a new director.
