Construction began about two months ago, and in that time workers found some deteriorating mechanical pump and air-handling systems that will need to be replaced, according to a company news release. The setback pushes what officials originally said would be a six-month closure into next year.
The project will double the museum’s size to about 200,000 square feet, according to the release, and will expand it into the neighboring Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World. Other new features will include a renovated entry, a walk-through shark tank and a 40-foot stingray dome.
The project’s cost – not including the mechanical repairs – was about $14 million as of November.
Eight salary and 11 hourly full- and part-time employees will be laid off due to the extended closure, according to the release. WOW is working with them to find other employment. In November, eight full-time and 19 part-time employees were let go.
All of the fish and animals on exhibit have been moved to temporary locations. Most of the conservation and education programs will continue through the renovation.
WOW acting Executive Director Peggy Smith could not be reached for comment.
