Work Education is the Backbone of the Future

Posted online

At College of the Ozarks, we build momentum by preparing our students to thrive. Known as “Hard Work U.,” our commitment to combining rigorous academics with hands-on work education is producing graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also resilient, hardworking, and highly sought-after in the regional workforce.
Our Work Education Program is the backbone of this preparation. Students work to help offset the cost of their education, and from day one, students learn the value of responsibility, discipline, and teamwork. They even receive a grade for their work, which becomes a part of their permanent transcript. They work in every aspect of campus life — from serving in our on-campus hotel, The Keeter Center, to crafting student-made products sold at our visitor locations. These real-world experiences build more than just resumes; they instill a work ethic grounded in Christian values that will serve students well throughout their careers.
In fact, our graduates are so highly regarded that local employers frequently seek them out.
"We value C of O graduates because they not only bring strong technical skills but also a deep sense of character and commitment to their work," said Steve Willoughby, a regional business leader and long-time partner of the College.
His sentiments are echoed by Dr. Sue Head, Vice President for Cultural Activities and Institutional Advancement at the College, who notes that "our students leave here not just with a degree, but with a calling."

Impact on the Region
The impact of our graduates is particularly evident in the surrounding community. Many of our students choose to remain in the region after graduation, filling critical roles in industries such as healthcare, education, and engineering. It’s no surprise that over 50 percent of our nursing graduates and 85 percent of our education graduates stay local, contributing to the growth and wellbeing of the Ozarks. Their character, honed through the College’s unique educational approach, makes them invaluable assets to employers.
And it’s not just our graduates who benefit from this partnership. The College itself is one of the largest employers in the area, offering meaningful employment to both students and staff. We are proud to be recognized by Great Colleges to Work For (2024), a testament to the supportive and mission-driven environment we cultivate.
The numbers are great, but true momentum is the success of a student. Sophomore accounting major Gael Gonzalez left his home in Mexico for College of the Ozarks, driven by the chance to graduate debt-free. Despite feeling like his admissions interview was a “disaster,” Gonzalez persisted. “I called the office every day after that,” he said. His determination paid off, and he was accepted. At College of the Ozarks, he found not only education but also a supportive community. The family of Ryan Knight, Dean of Students, became like family to Gael, helping him grow spiritually. Resources like the Helping Hub and Base Camp have been crucial for his success. Gonzalez encourages others to pursue C of O: “Don’t live for the worldly college experience; live for Jesus Christ and grow in community.”
At College of the Ozarks, we’re not just preparing students for their first job. We’re equipping them for a lifetime of meaningful work and service. Our graduates are proof that the combination of academic excellence, work experience, and Christian values can create leaders who make a difference — both locally and globally.
