With Hillshire under its wing, Tyson Foods' 1Q sales, profits rise

In the first full quarter after acquiring Hillshire Brands, Springdale-based Tyson Foods Inc. recorded a 22 percent increase in net income on a record $10.8 billion in sales.

Tyson reported $309 million in first quarter net income, compared to $252 million in the same quarter last year, according to Arkansas Business. The meat processor’s quarterly sales are up 23.5 percent from last year.

Company officials cited consumer demand for chicken, as well as higher prices for beef and pork. Arkansas Business reports, by category, beef sales are up 18 percent to $4.4 billion, chicken is up 5 percent to $2.78 billion and pork is up 8 percent to $1.54 billion

The Hillshire business boosted results in prepared foods by 130 percent to $2.1 billion in sales.
