Wine barrel derby

Posted online
The Developmental Center of the Ozarks’ Aug. 28 Wine Barrel Derby 500 brought more than 100 spectators to Park Central Square to see local restaurants and businesses race custom-built vehicles made from wine barrels.

The event celebrates and promotes the pairing of wine and food in DCO’s Sept. 1 Wine Walk, a fund-raiser in which participants sample wines and cuisine at 12 locally owned downtown restaurants.

Trolley’s, in partnership with the architecture firm of Bates & Associates, defended its title as Wine Barrel Derby Champion in the second annual event. The team of Bruno’s and PaperWise came in second, and Ernie Biggs and Queen City Bicycles took third.

The pairing of Maria’s and Home Depot took the Most Creative Barrel prize, and the team of St. Michael’s and JJ’s Lawn Service received the Most Team Spirit award.

Above left, the Trolley’s/Bates team takes the lead against the team of Gilardi’s and Race Brother’s Farm and Home Supply.
