Willard Public Schools picked Evangel University to create a discounted pathway for teachers to earn a master’s degree.
They developed a cohort-based program that will admit up to 10 teachers every other year, starting in August 2026.
The 4,200-student district explored multiple options before opting to partner with Evangel. The Willard Public Schools Board of Education made the pact official in early March.
“Evangel stood out because of their collaborative approach and their willingness to work with us to design a cohort program that fits the needs of our teachers,” said Josh Ladd, assistant superintendent, in an interview. “Their ability to tailor elements of the program for working educators made them a strong fit for Willard.”
Under the agreement, the district will cover tuition and participating teachers' pay for university fees and books.
“We anticipate an annual allocation of $35,000 to cover our participants’ tuition costs,” Ladd said.
Teachers selected for the program can focus their master’s degree in either curriculum and instruction or educational leadership. The program is designed to be completed within 24 months.
The cohort model includes flexible scheduling. There will be evening, hybrid and on-site instruction in district buildings, to minimize travel. The district coursework will emphasize practical learning and instructional priorities.
Teachers who earn a master’s degree gain education and increase their annual salary.
“This partnership allows us to invest directly in our teachers while strengthening the quality of instruction in our classrooms,” Ladd said in a news release. “By supporting educators as they pursue advanced degrees, we’re building leadership capacity within the district and creating opportunities that benefit both our staff and our students.”
