Why do top performers often struggle when promoted to leadership positions?

There are many reasons new leaders struggle, but the primary struggle is based on identity. If an individual who was a top performer gets promoted it may be difficult to give up the "star performer" identity and learn how to support others. If the new leader still identifies with being an employee, they might cover for employees instead of holding them accountable. Define what leadership means in your organization and align your leaders to the desired mindsets and behaviors.
