Who owns America's debt?

Contrary to the beliefs of some, foreign countries do not own a majority of America's over $19 trillion in debt.

Foreign nations hold about 32.5 percent of the total. China owns some 7 percent.

The top holder is U.S. citizens and American entities, such as state and local governments, pension funds, mutual funds and the Federal Reserve. Together, they own the vast majority - 67.5 percent - of the debt, according to CNNMoney.
