Whitlock Co. establishes CFO fund in honor of late founder

Posted online

Barney Whitlock, founding partner of the accounting firm now operating as The Whitlock Co., died in August 2019. Now, the company has established a memorial fund in his honor at Community Foundation of the Ozarks.

Whitlock, who also was a founding board member of CFO, died at age 79 on Aug. 14, according to his obituary at GormanScharpf.com.

The Whitlock Co. yesterday announced the creation of the Barney Whitlock Memorial Fund at CFO through a post on its LinkedIn profile.

“Barney was one of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks’ 11 founders. Our community has benefited greatly from his foresight as one of the visionaries who wanted to create a public charitable foundation to maintain local charitable assets in our region,” the LinkedIn post reads. “Barney always put people ahead of business and truly cared about everyone he knew and worked with.

“Barney was such a great mentor. He always had time for you and was a great listener.”

Reached this morning, The Whitlock Co. Managing Partner Joe Page said the company plans to donate $10,000 to the fund and make a similar pledge for the next three years.

Louise Knauer, chief operating officer for CFO, said the fund was established as an administrative endowment for the nonprofit’s general operations.

“We don’t have it earmarked for any particular purpose at this time,” she said via email.

A 2018 recipient of the Missourian Award, Whitlock partnered with Elmer Selim and David Keehn to establish Whitlock, Selim & Keehn LLP in 1985, after exiting Fox & Co. The firm took on The Whitlock Co. name in 2008, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

The Whitlock Co. ranked No. 6 on SBJ’s 2019 list of the area’s largest certified public accounting firms, with 13 local CPAs on staff. The list was published in October 2019.
