Whitlock Co. acquires accounting firm

Posted online
Springfield accounting and professional services firm The Whitlock Co. has closed on its second acquisition under a five-year strategic plan launched in 2007.

Whitlock officials Nov. 1 entered into a merger agreement with Mitchell, Roy & Wilson LLC and partner Paula Wilson.

Mitchell, Roy & Wilson employed six at its 3333 S. National Ave. office, bringing Whitlock’s total employment to 36. In the deal, Wilson was named Whitlock’s seventh partner.

Whitlock Co. Marketing Director Anne McCormick said the new staff members would be settled into Whitlock’s 3271 E. Battlefield Road office by next week.

Whitlock officials finalized the firm’s first merger in January 2007, when Patricia C. Stoner, CPA PC and partner Patti Stoner came on board. Less than 18 months later, it added a handful of accountants to run its Joplin office.

McCormick said the Wilson acquisition would increase Whitlock’s revenue by 12 percent this year and add a layer of depth to the firm’s existing services, which includes audit and tax work.

“The Mitchell, Roy & Wilson team brings a wealth of experience and additional industry expertise to our firm,” added Joe Page, Whitlock Co. managing partner, in a news release. “Our existing clients will find them an exceptional resource.”

Whitlock Co. is wrapping up its five-year strategic plan, which set a goal of nine partners and 50 employees by 2012. McCormick said the company plans to announce another two partners within the month and add a handful of employees in January to gear up for tax season.

In June, Whitlock Co. appointed Page as managing partner to succeed Dave Myers, who held the top post since 2002.

Last month, Whitlock Co. was recognized in Las Vegas as one of the 100 Best Accounting Firms to Work For by Accounting Today and Best Companies Group. Whitlock has made the nationwide list four years in a row based on surveys by executives and employees. The firms’ stories are scheduled to be published in Accounting Today’s December issue.

Whitlock Co. is among Springfield Business Journal’s 2011 Choice Employers and will be recognized along with 11 companies tomorrow night at 425 Downtown, 425 W. Walnut St.
