White House solar plan aims at low- and middle-income people

Posted online
The Obama administration today will announce an initiative to help low- and middle-income Americans gain access to solar energy, part of a series of steps President Barack Obama is taking to tackle climate change, according to administration officials.

In the announcement, the administration is expected to indicate it will triple the capacity of solar and other renewable energy systems in federally subsidized housing by 2020, allow homeowners to more easily borrow money for solar improvements and start a program to help renters gain access to solar energy, according to the New York Times.

Along with the announcement, charities, investors, states and cities are expected today to pledge more than $520 million to help pay for  solar and energy-efficiency projects for lower-income communities.
