WhatsApp targeted by spyware

Posted online

Facebook-owned messaging service WhatsApp is being targeted by spyware.

Officials with the company confirmed the vulnerability of the app but did not name a perpetrator. The confirmation came after the Financial Times reported Israeli company NSO Group created malware that can intercept protected phone calls made on the app.

“WhatsApp encourages people to upgrade to the latest version of our app, as well as keep their mobile operating system up to date, to protect against potential targeted exploits designed to compromise information stored on mobile devices,” a WhatsApp spokesperson told CNBC in a statement Monday. “We are constantly working alongside industry partners to provide the latest security enhancements to help protect our users.”
