What will it take to get decent Wi-Fi at sporting events?

With throngs of fans in the stands on smartphones posting selfies, texting seat locations or tweeting crucial plays all at the same time, major league athletic stadiums are some of the worst places to use Wi-Fi.

Executives of St. Louis’ sports franchises tackled the matter during the inaugural Startup Voodoo, a technology conference at Ballpark Village. According to St. Louis Business Journal, the sports and technology panel included St. Louis Cardinals Chairman and CEO Bill DeWitt Jr. and Rams Executive Vice President of Football Operations and COO Kevin Demoff.

Network infrastructure was the recurring theme.

“The big thing here is we need to get a backbone that’s capable of serving all 45,000 fans at once,” DeWitt said, noting a Major League Baseball program has brought Wi-Fi to 20 of the 30 stadiums this summer.

Busch Stadium is not among the 20, according to the business journal. Service in the Edward Jones Dome might be even more challenging.

“At this point, I just want your phone to actually work in the building,” the Rams’ Demoff said.
