What President Trump told Jerry Jones in private about NFL player protests

Last fall, President Donald Trump and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had a private phone conversation. This is what Trump said: “You can’t win this one.”

That exchange came out in Jones’ deposition during the proceedings for Colin Kaepernick’s collusion complaint. He alleges Trump’s criticism of player protests prompted the NFL to shift stance.

According to the deposition, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, Trump instructed Jones to take that message back to other power brokers in the league.

NFL owners last week voted to change league rules, requiring that players stand on the field during the national anthem or their teams could face repercussions.
