What it costs to keep NYC safe from terror

Protecting New York City's metropolitan area from terror costs roughly $1 billion a year, according to Michael Paddock, CEO of Grants Office LLC, which tracks federal spending.

That money helped recently when authorities captured Chelsea bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami within 48 hours.

The city's emergency service unit - roughly 500 counter-terrorism officers - carry the Colt AR-15, which cost about $700 each, and the $500 Glock 19. They also wear items such as bullet-resistant vests that start at about $200 and protective helmets that can run close to $1,000.

About $400 million of the cost is picked up by the federal government.
