Wells Fargo card requests drop by most since scandal erupted

In the largest decline since a scandal came out in September involving fake accounts, Wells Fargo's credit card applications dropped by 55 percent in February from a year earlier.

Also, retail customers opened 43 percent fewer checking accounts during February. That marks the sixth straight month of declines.

“It will take time for us to work through the changes we are making in our business, but we remain focused on strengthening our relationships with existing customers and building new ones with potential customers,” said Mary Mack, head of community banking at San Francisco-based Wells Fargo.
