Weekly jobless claims rise more than expected

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week, but not enough to change views of a sustained strength in the labor market.

Reuters reports an increase of 17,000 initial claims for the week ended Dec. 27, bringing the total to 298,000.

That follows four straight weeks of declines.
