Local volunteers for Ozarks Food Harvest’s Glean Team prepare garden beds for crops March 2. In its third season, the team is part of the food bank’s Full Circle Gardens program, which addresses food insecurity across southwest Missouri by improving access to fresh produce. Last year, volunteers worked for 1,400 hours at community gardens and farms to harvest nearly 23,000 pounds of produce. The program is on track to expand its donations by 5,000 pounds.
Steve Vanderhoop, a retired colonel in the Missouri Army National Guard, is one of five southwest Missouri volunteers to receive a Veterans Service Award from Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder on March 1 at the state capitol. Of the 35 veterans honored, other locals were Ellen Duvall, of Springfield, a 20-year veteran of the Navy Nurse Corps; James Compton, of Mount Vernon, a U.S. Navy veteran; Everett Kelly, of Buffalo, who served in the Marine Corps and Army; and Richard Lewis, of Bolivar, an Air Force vet.
