Joel Cochren, national retail area sales manger for U.S. Cellular, and members of the Boys and Girls Club of Springfield lay landscaping bricks May 21 at the nonprofit’s Musgrave Unit, 720 S. Park Ave. U.S. Cellular associates volunteered to pick up trash, plant flowers and lay mulch as part of a beautification project. The company donated $12,500 during National Volunteer Month in April to the Springfield club for science, technology, engineering and math training as part of a $1.25 million national commitment to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and National 4-H Council.

Representatives of the Southwest Center for Independent Living prepare to break ground May 27 for the nonprofit and disability resource center’s second building at 2864 S. Nettleton Ave. The $2.3 million, 21,150-square-foot project designed by Slone Architects & Interior Designers Inc. is being developed by Morelock-Ross Builders. It will house SCIL’s assistive technology department, a model apartment for teaching independent living skills and an adaptive equipment demonstration room.
