After nearly a decade in the works, officials on June 13 cut the ribbon on the University of Missouri School of Medicine’s Springfield clinical campus. Located at the site of Lathrop & Gage LLP’s former Springfield office, 1845 S. National Ave., the school represents a public-private partnership between MU, CoxHealth, Mercy Hospital Springfield, Missouri State University and the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce. Led by Dr. Andrew Evans, far right, of Mercy Clinic Springfield, the starting local class comprises nine third- and fourth-year students. Taney County Partnership Executive Director Jonas Arjes receives the 2016 Professional Economic Developer of the Year during the Missouri Economic Development Council’s annual conference at Lake of the Ozarks. The award honors a member who has made significant contributions toward community-based economic development. “Branson is undergoing a strong reinvestment cycle with more than $300 million of new investment for 2016,” said Jeff Seifried, president and CEO of Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Many of these projects were deemed undoable. However, with Jonas guiding business owners and investors, that trend has changed for the positive.” Arjes accepted the award June 15 from MEDC President Donna Brown.

Springfield Business Journal won two national awards during the Alliance of Area Business Publishers’ annual conference in Des Moines, Iowa. Editor Eric Olson and Features Editor Emily Letterman hold awards for best overall design, silver, and best newspaper, bronze, among small tabloids. “Each issue is filled with information that gives residents a strong sense of the city and its businesses,” the judges wrote. During the three-day conference, the AABP presented 112 awards out of 644 entries by nearly 50 business newspapers and magazines.

Brad Coker of Springfield startup Sparrow Malting LLC presents June 15 at 1 Million Cups. Coker and business partner Jonathan Putnam of Brick & Mortar Coffee describe the venture as a farm-to-brewer small batch producer of grains for wholesale and online sales to local, regional and national breweries, bakeries and home users. From growing, sourcing and malting to modifying, preparing and distributing, they’re targeting full production by the end of 2017.
Taking shape on 3.5 acres just east of State Highway H/Glenstone Avenue in the area of Valley Water Mill Park are the Fulbright Heights Apartments – three 23,000-square-foot buildings with 24 units each for a total of 72 one- and two-bedroom apartments.
