Roughly 1,400 people attended the 2012 Missouri Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony Jan. 29, which featured former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jim Edmonds. In eight full seasons with the Cardinals, Edmonds was named to three All-Star teams, and in 2000, he became the first Cardinals outfielder ever to hit 40 or more home runs in a season. A total of 16 athletes, including Emmitt Thomas, Jon Sundvolt and Jamie Quirk, and sports programs were recognized at the event.

Mary Beth O’Reilly hugs her grandson, Charlie, in celebration after receiving the Springfieldian Award during the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting Jan. 27 at the University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center. O’Reilly, a breast cancer and lung cancer survivor, established Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks in 1999, after her friend, Kristen O’Brien Hardy, died from breast cancer at age 31. Since that time, the foundation has assisted more than 1,000 families in providing breast cancer resources and support.

Roughly 200 attorneys and their guests attended the event, which was held at Hickory Hills Country Club. Grantham, of Carver, Cantin and Grantham LLC, becomes the 88th attorney – and third woman – to lead the local bar association, which was founded in Greene County in 1903, and has nearly 1,000 members.

After 15 years in Ozark, Columbia College officials relocated to Springfield as a way to meet the needs of a growing student population. Columbia College-Springfield is located at 3271 E. Battlefield Road, Ste. 250, and features four classrooms, one computer lab and a student lounge. Classes for the school’s January session began Jan. 9.
