Weather Channel hires investment banks to pursue sale options

The owners of the Weather Channel have hired the banks Morgan Stanley and PJT Partners Inc. to explore a sale, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg Business.

The company is currently owned by Blackstone Group LP, Bain Capital LLC and Comcast Corp.’s NBCUniversal, which acquired it for $3.5 billion in 2008.

The unnamed sources told Bloomberg the Weather Co. is exploring only selling its digital business, which has a much higher value than its cable network. However, separating the businesses could present a hurdle in the sale.
