The state of Washington recovered $300 million paid out for fraudulent unemployment claims.
“This is a national attack by sophisticated criminals and isn’t just happening to Washington state,” Washington Employment Security Department Commissioner Suzi LeVine said.
Officials say information from tens of thousands of people in the state was used for the scam.
